Meet [your] therapist

Natsumi Pineiro, MS, LMHC

A native South Floridian, FIU alumna, dedicated to providing services virtually across our Sunshine State.

Skilled in educating, advocating, and empowering.
Areas of specialty (and clinical passions) include working with: youth, women, neurodevelopmental conditions (ex: ADHD), and anxiety.

If you’re reading this thinking “Uh-oh, I don’t know if I fall into her specialties” — Please don’t be discouraged from reaching out! We can do a free consultation to talk about your situation and see if my skill set and experiences might still fit your needs.

I believe that healing and growth don’t require you to hit a critical point: you can start at any time and at any age.

“It’s heavy. If you can’t let it go, know at least you won’t be carrying it alone anymore”

Across the board, I do my best to work with my clients to collaborate on making change happen. We’re a team.

When we work together, one of my goals is ensuring that I’m providing you a non-judgmental space to share, explore, and process so you can flourish.

Hopefully our work together can help empower you, increase confidence, and lead to a happier self.

  • You’re a thoughtful person. Detail-oriented. It’s hard not to get caught up in thinking about all of the different possibilities, including the ways that things can go horribly wrong.

Here’s some experiences you may relate to:

    • Trouble sleeping at night because the thoughts won’t quiet down.

    • Sweating over things you aren’t even totally sure will happen (metaphorically or literally).

    • Your worries are making you feel physically sick (tummy/headaches, nausea, racing heart, breathlessness, etc.).

    • Feeling like you’re in this constant worry-loop that never ends.

    • Trouble staying focused and remembering because you’re so preoccupied with worries.

    • Avoiding situations, people, or environments because you feel nervous not knowing what to expect.

These are just a few of the common ways that anxiety or panic can show up for people.

If you find yourself letting your thoughts carry you away, please let me help take you from “mind-full” to mindful.

  • Maybe every day feels exactly the same. Not quite bad, not so good either.

You know life isn’t always going to be this way and you do believe that things can get better (that’s probably why you’re still here reading this), but you’re getting awfully sick of waiting for better days to come.

    Maybe lately you find yourself:

    • Feeling like you’ve lost your “spark” or longing for your past self.

    • Struggling to start new habits, hobbies, or activities (even if you want to do them).

    • Withdrawing from friends (not posting on social media, not replying to texts/DMs, turning down plans, etc.)

    • “Bedrotting” for days, never actually feeling restored.

    • Having trouble with changes in your eating or sleeping habits.

It’s hard to talk about these things with someone that may not get it.

While I can’t guarantee you a “quick fix” (and I’d be awfully skeptical myself of any therapist worth their salt that insists on that) —

I feel confident that the same way you didn’t get to this point overnight, we can work together to gradually and meaningfully chip away session by session to sculpt a life you feel is worth living.

  • You have it all under control (because if you don’t do it, who will?)

Firm “no’s” are not in your regular vocabulary.

You know that nobody can do it like you do, which makes it even harder to step away from your ever-growing to-do list. You’re here because you realize that there’s only so many times you can say “I’m fine” before your body decides to make it clear that you’re not.

You can’t keep over-functioning, setting yourself on fire to keep things warm — yet you also don’t know how to break free.

This hits you extra hard because maybe you’re:

    • Great at academics, highly educated (and feel like you’re supposed to “know better”)

    • In a caregiving-type role, where others literally depend on you (for example: a parent, oldest sibling, family’s breadwinner, etc.)

    • Struggling to find a balance between the job you absolutely need and the life you fear is slipping away in the process.

    • Someone that is praised or respected in the family, seemingly only when you’re going above and beyond.

Usually high-achieving, high-functioning folks live the way they do as a result of things that happened in their past. They’ve learned that this is the only way to survive.

Whether it’s financial insecurity, family dynamics, culture, or something else — together we’re going to work on exploring the root, identifying real problems or obstacles that contribute to what you’re facing, and taking tangible steps towards change.

Rest assured, I’m not just giving you some breathing techniques you could’ve googled yourself and telling you to take a bubble bath. Our work together won’t lose sight of the context in which you live and will be tailored to your specific needs.

  • Have you or a loved one been recently diagnosed? Or have you been living with an official (or suspected) diagnosis, but feel like you never got the support you needed to really thrive with your condition?

Or maybe your ADHD or Autism (ASD) isn’t what you actually want support with, but you need a professional that can help you with other concerns without being thrown for a loop by your neurodivergence?

Look no further, you’ve found me!

Neurodevelopmental conditions, especially ADHD and/or Autism, are an area of specialty for me.

    • Been working with clients (youth, young adults, and parents) with the diagnosis for all 6 years of my career so far (a few hundred people directly served)!

      • 2 years focused on childhood ADHD during graduate school.

      • 2 years of engaging in treatment programs and research studies related to ADHD.

      • 2+ years of work in Broward and Miami-Dade counties as a counselor, care coordinator, and advocate for youth and families with any disability (ADHD and ASD fall under the umbrella).

Whether you are looking to build up your knowledge about a fresh diagnosis or are trying to navigate other challenges while having ADHD/ASD, I’m confident I can be helpful!

  • Ever felt like you needed to become “more normal” because you’re not quite fitting in?

Repeated actual (or perceived rejection) can result in losing confidence in ourselves, making it more intimidating to give socializing a chance in the future.

Social skills training can help you with evidence-based techniques to feel more confident in how you interact with others.

Not only will we be giving your skills a “software update” — we’ll have in-session opportunities to try them out, gradually working on plans to get you testing those skills out in the real world.

Depending on your age or developmental needs, social skills we practice may vary.

Whether it’s a child that needs support making friends at school or an adult that may need help navigating dating and workplace situations — I’ve got you covered.

  • Are you a parent or legal guardian that has read through any of these sections thinking “that sounds like my kid” ?

You’re in luck! A fairly large chunk of my experience has been working with kids and teens (for a few years now, virtually too!).

Every child is different, but overall I find that I can do effective virtual work with youth 6 years old and up.

Things you may want to know:

    • Research demonstrates pretty consistently across the board that teletherapy is just as effective as in-person therapies.

      • That said: therapy is most effective when we can actually engage in it. As a parent, I trust that you know best if your child has the capacity to handle online sessions.

    • When working with kids, I get creative to try engaging them.

      • I’m happy to integrate any cartoons, music, colors, etc. that your kid might enjoy into our therapy.

      • They’re welcome to bring fidgets, plushies, blankets, or whatever else makes them feel most comfortable.

      • Therapy isn’t school. We might have some ground rules to help structure sessions (everyone does best when we know what to expect), but the goal isn’t to “be perfect” — it’s to learn and practice skills that will help!

      • We can take planned breaks within session (ex: “5 minutes for __ minutes of work”) or shorten sessions as needed to meet your child’s needs and ensure they are not overwhelmed.

    • I do require for any client that is a minor (under age 18) to have both: parental consent and an adult present at home with the client during sessions that can be reached in case of any emergency.

    • Therapy is typically 1 hour of our week. Parents or supportive adults in the child’s life spend significantly more time together.

      • As a result, I always speak with parents at some point during the session to exchange updates about client’s progress and share any skills they can encourage practice of outside of sessions.
